The short and skinny of it all
Established in 2018 as a family operated market garden, we have taken methods and techniques from farmers all over the world and put them into practice right here in East Tennessee. Right from the start we wanted to move in a different direction than most. To that end we have implemented and developed farming practices based on eliminating the need for pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and synthetic fertilizers. We have taken small farming methods developed in Canada, Belgium, Italy, New Zealand, Sweden, and the U.S. and rolled them into something new, the end result of which are fruits and vegetables of the highest possible quality at competitive prices, grown within a sustainable agricultural model that is 100% independent of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and synthetic fertilizers.
Growing better not bigger
A lot of what we do is nothing new, more rediscovered than anything. Since we are small we focused on implementing farming methods designed for scale. We use a permanent raised bed system in which we will evolve over the next several years to a "No-Till" system. Our raised beds don't use side boards or concrete block but are raised using a rotary plow so they are all earthen.
We use hand tools to maintain the beds and to harvest and we have forgone the use of a traditional tractor in favor of an Italian built, two wheeled tractor, which keeps mechanical inputs (gas, maintenance, carbon footprint) to an absolute minimum. Fertility is maintained by incorporating copious amounts of compost for biological health, followed by organically certified, non synthetic, fertilizers. Our planting methods allow us to maximize our bed space to such an extent that we are on par with farms that are many times our size which allows us to provide a large variety & volume of items throughout the season.
